The Mercatus Center at George Mason University is hiring a Public Relations Associate for Media Relations. The Media Relations Associate will work to enhance the Mercatus Center’s visibility and public image by securing media placements for its scholars and research in international, national, Washington, DC, and other targeted media outlets.
Responsibilities include:
1. Working with the Director of Communications, program managers, and scholars to develop and implement media strategies for releases of new research and promotion of existing research
2. Developing and pitching story ideas about the Mercatus Center, research, and scholars to reporters
3. Creating and maintaining targeted media lists by conducting research and monitoring media coverage of relevant issues
4. Fostering working relationships with members of the media for our scholars and staff
5. Editing op-eds, book reviews, and other articles by Mercatus scholars
6. Writing press releases, briefings, and other press materials
7. Tracking and reporting on media activity
Qualified candidates will have:
1. 2-5 years of media relations experience with demonstrable placement success
2. B.A. or higher in English, Communications, Journalism, or similar discipline
3. Excellent written and verbal communications skills
4. An ability to prioritize, multi-task, and work effectively without micromanagement
Salary is competitive as are benefits, which include full health and dental insurance, a flexible spending account, long-term disability and life insurance, a 403(b) retirement savings program, a parking permit, and one course per semester at George Mason University.
