Editor-in-Chief, Doublethink

America's Future Foundation | Posted on May 31, 2007

Doublethink’s mission is to find and cultivate young conservative and libertarian writers while delivering an excellent magazine of politics, culture, economics, and the arts, with original photography, artwork, and fiction. In this way, Doublethink prepares young conservatives and libertarians who are likely to continue the spread of talent from the Right deeper into mainstream American media and culture. Published quarterly, Doublethink is the flagship magazine of America’s Future Foundation.

For the right candidate, the editor-in-chief position offers an extraordinary opportunity to edit a top conservative magazine with national readership, develop your own editorial vision, manage a publication process and staff, and demonstrate your leadership as a conservative and libertarian writer and editor.

Duties & Responsibilities

The editor-in-chief will control the editorial content of Doublethink, and will determine the magazine’s strategy for publication. More specifically, he or she will have the following responsibilities:

• Develop and articulate a vision for the magazine and build a plan for its promotion and growth;
• Commission and/or solicit 6-8 feature length essays and articles for each issue;
• Mentor young conservative and libertarian writers; the editor-in-chief must be as invested in the success of a twenty-four-year-old writer with a good idea and few or no publication credits as any newspaper or magazine editor is invested in his top reporter or essayist;
• Manage the work-flow of the editorial and publication process; set and meet deadlines;
• Manage a staff that includes an associate editor, outside editors, proofreaders, photographers, and designers;
• Manage the marketing, subscriptions, and publicity for the magazine, including Doublethink’s website;
• Develop and manage Doublethink’s annual budget;
• Serve as the public face of the magazine, building Doublethink’s brand and developing a network of young writers and journalists;
• Assist the executive director in raising funds to achieve the magazine’s mission; the executive director will raise the funds, but editor-in-chief will help prepare marketable proposals for fund-raising.

Qualifications and Experience

The Doublethink editor-in-chief should have:
• At least two years of practical editing experience in general-interest print or high profile web publications;
• At least two years experience supervising staff colleagues;
• At least five published feature length (non op-ed, non interview) essays and articles;
• A broad interest in and knowledge of conservative and libertarian philosophy and public policy;
• An excellent understanding of effectiveness in print and web communications;
• A commitment to the mission and principles of America’s Future Foundation;
• The entrepreneurial spirit to build and run a growing magazine.

The position is part-time, intended to be the primary extra-curricular activity of applicants. The position comes with a $3,000-$4,000 stipend per issue.

Candidates should send a resume, cover letter, and 3 writing samples, to David Kirby, via email at kirby@americasfuture.org. Deadline for applying: June 22, 2007.
