Assistant, Institute on Political Journalism

The Fund for American Studies seeks an Assistant for the Institute on Political Journalism. This position will assist the Director of the Institute in implementing three key areas of responsibility including
The Institute on Political Journalism (IPJ) held each summer at Georgetown University,
Professional and Collegiate Awards program, and Regional Journalism Conferences.

Principal Responsibilities:

IPJ Summer Institute
Assist with all details related to the planning and implementation of the IPJ summer institute. The Institute is an academic internship program attended by approximately 85 undergraduate students interested in a career in journalism or communications. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Assisting with administrative details related to the recruitment and admissions process for the summer Institute.
Maintaining contact with enrolled students.
Identifying new Internship sites.
Updating internship site database.
Assist in placing students at Internships.
Assist in planning events, panel discussions, and speakers for summer.


Journalism Awards Program
IPJ oversees two professional awards and one collegiate award. The program assistant will help with all details related to growing journalism awards program. Duties include but are not limited to:

Helping market the awards to various news outlets and assist in increasing the number of entries for all three awards.
Manage award entry submissions.
Work with award judges.
Plan and execute details related to journalism awards luncheon.


Journalism Conferences
Assist with all details related to 2 collegiate journalism conferences held annually in Washington, D.C. and various cities across the country. Duties include but are not limited to:

The recruiting of students and speakers for conferences.
Event planning details.
Assist with event marketing, including brochure and web publications.


Qualifications

This is an entry-level position and a Bachelors degree is required. The ideal candidate will have strong communication and organizational skills, knowledge of journalism, communications, and public relations. Applicants should be familiar with key players in media and politics and have some experience with multi-media editing and publishing programs. Position requires excellent phone and interpersonal skills.
