The Mercatus Center at George Mason University is looking for a well-organized, meticulous program associate for publications to manage the process related to a variety of print and Web publications for external and internal audiences. Specific Mercatus publications include the Mercatus Policy Series, public interest comments, working papers, and related studies.
Under supervision of the Director of Publications, the responsibilities of this position will include but are not limited to the following:
1. Working with the editors and staff to manage production processes of the Mercatus Policy Series, as well as other books, reports, and studies published by Mercatus.
2. Working with authors, copyeditors, and designers to ensure conciseness, consistency, logic, grammar, punctuation, usage, spelling, and adherence to house style;
3. Inputting editorial corrections;
4. Managing publications through final stages of production process with the graphic designer, author, and director of publications;
5. Reviewing final proofs and ensuring all corrections are input; and
6. Checking bluelines when they return from the printer, entering final corrections, and ensuring press schedules are met.
Qualifications: A bachelor's degree in English or journalism and 1-2 years of experience. Mastery of English grammar is essential, as well as strong writing and editing skills. Knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style and editorial marks is also essential. Knowledge of the printing process is a plus.
The successful applicant will have good written and verbal communications skills, the ability to juggle multiple projects with varying timelines, and will be familiar with the policy issues the Mercatus Center addresses.
