Industry: Government/Public Administration
Location: Washington, DC

Length of Internships: Summer internship start dates are flexible (May/June) and will end early-August.

Fall internship dates are flexible, but usually are from early September to Mid-December.

Financial Arrangement: Daily stipend to reimburse for the cost of lunch and commuting. ALEC pays for interns to travel to its Policy Summits and Annual Meeting. When traveling, an appropriate per diem is provided.

ALEC, the American Legislative Exchange Council, is a nonpartisan membership association for conservative state lawmakers who share a common belief in limited government, free markets, federalism, and individual liberty. It is a voluntary membership association for people who believe the government closest to the people is fundamentally more effective, more just, and a better guarantor of freedom than the distant, bloated federal government in Washington, D.C. ALEC promotes the principles of federalism by developing and promoting policies that reflect the Jeffersonian principles that the powers of government are derived from, and assigned to; first the People, then the States, and finally the National Government.

As an ALEC intern, approximately 1/3 of your time is spent on administrative tasks, while almost half of your time will be spent doing substantial research or work related to your interest. Additionally, about 20% of your time will be spent on educational opportunities such as attending Senate and House hearings on Capitol Hill and a weekly learning lunch here at ALEC, as well as going to other functions in DC to gain a complete Washington experience.

ALEC Interns have the opportunity to work primarily in one of the following departments, based on your interest.

ALEC Policy Department:
The Policy Department consists of eight national task forces, formed to address the major public policy issues in the states. Interns are essential in the research and writing process of the task forces' publications and tracking state legislation, therefore they must possess strong skills in these respective areas. The current ALEC Task Forces are: Civil Justice; Commerce and Economic Development; Criminal Justice; Education; Health and Human Services; Homeland Security; Natural Resources; Tax and Fiscal Policy; and Telecommunications and Information Technology.

The ALEC Membership Department:
The Membership Department, working in conjunction with the Office of Legislation and Policy, secures the financial resources that are needed to implement ALEC events and programs. In addition to securing private sector funding, the department serves our nearly 3,000 members as the primary service providers of the organization. Interns in the Membership Department must therefore have excellent interpersonal, organizational, and computer skills.

ALEC Public Affairs Department:
This department initiates all media campaign efforts, developing strategies that effectively communicate the work of ALEC and its members to the states. Public Affairs interns must possess strong computer design and layout skills, in addition to superb writing and editing ability.

Office of Meetings and Conferences: The primary responsibility of this department is the organization of the ALEC Spring Policy Summit, Annual Meeting, and States and Nation Policy Summit. Interns in this department are involved in many aspects of the planning and coordination process for these meetings.

ALEC Finance Department:
The Finance Department works with all of ALEC’s departments, and is responsible for budgeting and accounting practices for the organization. Interns in this department must possess competent finance skills and strong interpersonal skills.

General Qualifications:
Prerequisites: Internships are open to all years, all majors, with emphasis on Government, Economics, History, Business, Information Technology, Marketing, and Finance for respective departments.
