Liberals and faith roundtable...
Join AFF on Thursday, February 22, for a roundtable discussion on liberals and faith. In general, Democrats and the left have been courting the religious right with increasing fervor lately--note Barack Obama’s recent visit to an evangelical megachurch--with hopes of couching arguments about minimum wage, global warming, and sundry other causes in religious terms. How does all this square with liberals’ usual talk of separation of church and state? And how do religious conservatives best fit into the American political science? What should their greatest priorities be? How should those with a view toward the City of God approach the din of politics in the City of Man? Joining us to discuss these issues will be Georgetown professor Patrick Deneen and Joe Lindsley of The Weekly Standard. Further panelists to be announced.
The event will take place at the Fund for American Studies, 1706 New Hampshire Avenue, NW, near Dupont Circle. Drinks at 6:30; Roundtable begins at 7:00. Roundtables are free for members, $5 for non-members. So join today! Please RSVP to Kathleen O'Hearn at kathleen@americasfuture.org.
Gay marriage Machiavels and peer redux...
In our online magazine this week, James Kirchick asks the Massachusetts gay marriage movement to say it ain't so. Meanwhile, Joanne McNeil writes about how open source methods of research publication are going further to help along peer review than any legislation Congress can write.

Happy hour this month...
AFF’s next monthly happy hour will take place on Wednesday, February 28, at the Eighteenth Street Lounge. The address is 1212 18th Street, NW, and the nearest Metro stop is Dupont Circle on the Red Line. Perhaps adding to its mystique, the 18th Street Lounge doesn't have a sign out front, so just look for the mirrored entrance next to Candey hardware store. Just look for AFF members wearing little orange AFF lapel pins. As always, there is no cover and there are beer, wine, and rail drink specials from 6 to 9 p.m.
Next AFF Leadership Dinner…
Stay tuned for a special announcement of the next speaker in AFF’s Leadership Dinner Series. There will be limited seating for this dinner, so you’ll have to act fast to RSVP. Stay tuned…!
