Immigration postmortem roundtable this week...
As the recent battle in the Senate showed, few issues are as divisive in contemporary politics as immigration. But what should classical liberals think of last month's debacle in the Senate? Should classical liberals cheer the defeat of the immigration bill or be upset that Congress continues to make little progress on an issue with serious economic and national security concerns? What is the next step toward immigration reform? If progress cannot be made at the federal level, will state's take action into their own hands?
This event will take place on Wednesday, July 18th on Capitol Hill in the Rayburn House Office Building room B-339. Joining us to discuss the issue is writer Amanda Carpenter, Dan Griswold of the Cato Institute and Brian Darling of the Heritage Foundation. Drinks start at 6:30 p.m.; panel begins at 7 p.m. AFF Roundtables are free for members, $5 for non-members. So join today!
Happy hour next week...
AFF's next monthly happy hour will take place on Wednesday, July 25th, at the Eighteenth Street Lounge. The address is 1212 18th Street, NW, and the nearest Metro stop is Dupont Circle on the Red Line. Perhaps adding to its mystique, the 18th Street Lounge doesn't have a sign out front, so just look for the mirrored entrance next to Candey hardware store. Please note: we'll be out on the back patio and on the second floor. Just look for AFF members wearing little orange AFF lapel pins. As always, there is no cover and there are beer, wine, and rail drink specials from 6 to 9 p.
Leadership dinner this month...
On Thursday, February 26th AFF will present the next installment in its Leadership Dinner Series, featuring Judge James P. Gray, author of "Why Our Drug Laws Have Failed and What We Can Do About It." Based on his personal experience as a federal prosecutor and a trial judge in California, Gray makes a conservative case against the folly of the war on drugs--the taxpayer expense, the heartbreaking effects, and the resulting dangers to our liberty. Join us as Judge Gray offers a road map for what the next generation of conservative and libertarian leaders can do to take on one of our most vexing public policy issues.
Leadership Dinners are reserved partner, director, and executive level members. Please check with membership directors Sharon Yecies or Robby Schrum if you are unsure of your membership status.
The event will start 6:30 p.m. with a brief reception, dinner will begin at 7:00 p.m., and it will take place at the Arts Club located at 2017 Eye Street, NW, Washington, D.C. The nearest Metro stop is Farragut West.
Win a free iPod when you tell a friend about IWW...
Inside Washington Weekly is AFF's weekly political roundtable podcast hosted by David White. If you haven't yet listened to it, you're really missing out. It's a wonderful irreverent look at the week's event from a young conservative and libertarian perspective. You can check it out at www.insidewashingtonweekly.com.
We want you to help us spread the word about IWW, so we've come up with a little contest. For each five friends you tell about the podcast, you will be entered to win a free Apple iPod Shuffle. Tell ten friends, get two shots at the iPod; tell fifteen, get three shots. So what are you waiting for? Go to http://www.americasfuture.org/podcast/iww/share/ to enter.
In the podcast this week...
This week on Inside Washington Weekly, AFF's weekly podcast, McCain’s sinking ship, David Vitter and the DC Madame, and Iraq, as well as below the fold news from our panelists. The show's panelists this week are Dave Weigel of Reason, Amanda Carpenter of Townhall.com, and Jamie Kirchick of The New Republic. David White hosts. In Brainwash last week...
Last week in Brainwash, Joanne McNeil asked what it would be like if we could drug the pain away. All of it. Including the memories. And John Tabin asked what it would take for you to become a "Key Republican Senator" -- usually, though, it involves being kind of a jerk.
